I HAD the unqualified blessing of living with Rachel Avnery for 58 years. Last Saturday I took leave of her body.

Rubber Man

I COULD not restrain myself. Though I was alone in the room, I burst out laughing. I was reading a newspaper report about the latest poll. People were asked to evaluate the nation’s leaders.

„Rejoice Not…“

“REJOICE NOT when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth, / Lest the Lord see [it], and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.”. This is one of the most beautiful passages in the Bible (Proverbs 24:17-18), and indeed in the Hebrew language. It is beautiful in other languages , too, though no translation comes close to the beauty of the original. Of course, it is natural to be glad when one’s enemy is defeated, and the thirst for revenge is a human trait. But gloating – schadenfreude – is something different altogether. An ugly thing.
